Fender Player Plus Meteora: HH Guitar & Active Meteora Bass – Déjà Vu?
Yet more variations on the whacky Meteora body style, will Fender strike gold this time?
The Fender Player Plus Meteora range has just been revamped and revised with new features! You’ll find the new Player Plus Meteora HH and importantly, for the first time, the Player Plus Active Meteora Bass models.
Player Plus Meteora HH
The Player Plus Meteora HH is a modern Fender design that importantly has been re-worked and re-issued with some new finishes. You’ll find a body made of alder and a maple neck with fretboard options including maple or Pau Ferro. Additionally, you’ll find that the two Fireball Humbuckers are splittable via the S-1TM switch.
It should be noted that the neck offers a silky matt lacquer, a modern C-profile, “rolled” fretboard edges, a 12′′ radius and 22 medium jumbo frets. Additionally, you’ll find a 2-point tremolo, and locking tuners for rock-solid tuning and quick string changes.
Nice shape, shame about the tone?
I really wanted to like the original Meteora model and the previous dual humbucker versions, however, they never did anything for me tonally. Importantly, I found both previous models I played to be very average in terms of build quality and playability.
Admittedly, I think the body shape of the Meteora looks really cool but by the same token, I was left underwhelmed. I felt the original version sounded like a regular Telecaster and in the same way the dual humbucker model was just nothing special.
Obviously then, I hope this latest incarnation will make me smile when I try one! I like the body shape and style, and there are some nice colour options with this new release as well.
The new Fender Player Plus Meteora HH comes in 3-Color Sunburst, Belair Blue, Cosmic Jade and Silverburst finishes.
Player Plus Active Meteora Bass
Whilst you’ve been able to buy a Fender Meteora guitar for about four years now, it should be noted that this is the first bass version! If you’re used to the two classic Fender bass body styles, such as the Precision and Jazz bass, then without a doubt, you might find it looks a little strange!
Clearly, as a member of the Player Plus family, the Active Meteora Bass is available with active sound control and in some eye-catching colours. Consequently, you’ll find that the body is again made of alder, with a maple neck and either a pau ferro or maple fretboard. Furthermore, there are two Fireball Humbuckers paired with an 18 volt preamp with 3-band EQ as well as a mini toggle switch for active and passive operation.
Meteora Bass: An Important Addition?
Admittedly for my tastes, these Meteora basses aren’t exactly what I would want; all the same, they are at least something different! Without a doubt, it will be interesting to see what players think of them when they get their hands on them. I think they could be pretty good, but I really need to check one out in the real world before I pass judgement.
With this in mind, could the Meteora Bass be the stand out model from the Meteora series? I was previously underwhelmed by the previous guitar versions; alternatively, the bass version could offer something new?
It should be noted that the bass versions are slightly more expensive than the guitar versions, with the official RRP at $100 more. With this in mind I would recommend you check out the demo videos below; if you do try one out, please let me know what you think of them in the comments section below!

One response to “Fender Player Plus Meteora: HH Guitar & Active Meteora Bass – Déjà Vu?”
Looks better as a bass, in my opinion. Now they can just offer some in the Squire line, with lefties!
