FirePresser plug-in: blend freely between four classic compressors
Firesonic & United Plugins’ FirePresser is a software compressor with a big promise – it lets you blend between four classic compressor emulations through a familiar clickpad interface. The goal is to recreate the approach of chaining different compressors in series to mix together their characteristics. It’s a creative idea that I haven’t seen in other plug-ins. Most all-in-one compressors only let you use one comp at a time.

The emulated compressor models are VARIMU, STRESS, DB160 and 76. Each has an associated color space in the click pad and you can drag a dot into them to blend at will. The compressors’ place in the chain can be re-arranged through drag and drop and all compressor can be linked and controlled at once with the provided parameters. These include input and output gain faders, a link knob, attack, release, low-pass and hi-pass filters, a dry/wet mix knob and two bespoke controls – Turbo and Saturator. Turbo works to make the compression more aggressive and the saturator adds a pleasing analog edge to the resulting sound. A well equiped compressor, indeed.
‘Advanced’ features include a virtual Detector circuit for fine-tuning the compression, internal 64-bit audio processing, support for sample rates higher than 192kHz, and Smart Bypass – an intelligent bypassing feature to prevent audio artifacts when automating parameters.
As far as serial multi-compressors go, FirePresser is its own beast and the 15-day trial must be worth a try if compression is really something you can’t live without.
