The SP-2400 is the “Spiritual successor” to the E-Mu SP-1200 sampling drum machine that we first caught wind off back in March 2019. They’ve been taking preorders for a while and will soon be ready to ship and have posted a phone video tour of the finished prototype.

The look is largely unchanged from images they posted in June. The main differences are in the look of the pads and the colour of the text on the screen.

The video focuses on the hardware and we learn that the SP-2400 is now a stereo machine with a stereo output and 8 individual track outputs that can be panned internally. There are two phono preamped inputs for turntables but one set can also take a line input and there are 4 individual line inputs. There’s MIDI In/Out/Thru and Clock In/Out. An SD card slot provides access to sample library. It has both regular USB for computer connection and a USB Host port for MIDI controllers, which is very handy. The USB can also handle 8 channels of audio into your DAW.

The sides are now nicely brushed aluminium and there’s a headphone socket on the front with independent monitoring.

The SP-2400 can use up to 32 sounds at once in 4 banks. They then do a great demo of how the samples sound when you change the pitch complete with gritty artefacts in original style lo-fi mode. There’s also some filter action with an individual digital filter on each channel and they talk about how analogue filters will be available as daughterboard options.

There are still a few tweaks to apply both otherwise they are ready to into manufacturing and anticipate shipping in late February. I’m looking forward to seeing what this machine is capable of.
