NAMM 2022: Focal introduces ST6 series Solo6, Twin6 and Sub12 monitors

Focal has announced the ST6 series monitor speakers at NAMM 2022. The new series undoubtedly marks a major upgrade of the popular Focal Solo6 and Twin6 monitors with new drivers, redesigned cabinets, and a new Focus mode. To complement the new speakers, Focal has also announced the massive Sub12 subwoofer.

According to Focal, the next-generation Solo6 and Twin6 monitors feature new drivers to deliver enhanced sonic detail and transparency. The Solo6 is equipped with one 6.5” composite W-cone woofer, while the Twin6 offers two. In addition, the 1.5” Beryllium inverted dome tweeters feature optimized baffles for improved dispersion control.

Without a doubt, the most interesting new feature is a new version of Focus mode. This allows you to switch off the tweeter using a footswitch, thereby turning the 2-way system into a 1-way full-range monitor. Consequently, this means that you effectively get two monitors in one, with the 1-way option providing reduced dynamics for checking mixes and balance.

The Focal Solo6 is a bi-amped system with 80 watts for the woofer and 50 watts for the tweeter. While the monitor offers a frequency response of 45 Hz to 40 kHz (@ -3 dB), this changes to 110 Hz to 10 kHz in Focus mode. The maximum SPL is 110 dB.

In contrast, the amp module of the Twin6 delivers 2x 70 watts for the two woofers and 50 watts for the tweeter. While the frequency response is the same as that of the Solo6, the Twin6 reaches a slightly higher SPL of 112 dB.

Both speakers are equipped with high-pass filters, high and low shelving bands and an LMF EQ, which allows for precise room calibration.

Focal Sub12

Finally, the new Focal Sub12 subwoofer complements the Solo6 and Twin6 speakers. It is equipped with a 13” composite W-cone high-excursion woofer that extends the bass reproduction down to 30 Hz. The woofer is driven by a 600 W RMS (1000 W peak) amplifier and delivers up to 124.5 dB SPL. In addition to this, it offers comprehensive connectivity and adjustment options, including LFE, left, and right inputs and outputs, variable phase adjustment, polarity selection, and variable high and low pass filters.
