Fog Convolver is a true stereo convolution reverb processor from developer Audiothing. It’s still one of the deepest convolution reverbs you can buy at a ‘small indie developer’ price. Version 2.0 of the plug-in was released today, and it’s a complete rewrite and redesign. That, and the addition of modulation, effects, and an impulse response generator. Definitely the kind of update that justifies the lo-o-o-ng wait. Let’s check in…

Version 2 lets you load either 2 separate impulse responses or one true stereo/quad channel impulse response. It provides linked or separate controls for both. Additionally, there are 5 routing modes for arranging the impulses: single, serial, parallel, parallel mix, and true stereo.

The newly added modulation is accomplished via 4 LFOs. Each LFO has 10 waveforms, 18 destinations, one dedicated multi-mode filter (with pre, IR, or post modes), and a 5-band graphic EQ.

The impulse response collection features 8 factory banks with 660+ impulse responses made of spaces, analog and digital equipment, organic sources, and many other sources. The library is worth exploring in itself. Audothing provides a great overview of the collection on the product page. I highly recommend checking that out.

While True Stereo impulses are usually recorded simultaneously to capture a better stereo image, you can also use two completaly unrelated IRs to generate experimental mish-mash stereo reverbs. And if you don’t want to use any old impulse responses or samples, use the built-in impulse response generator to create custom artificial spaces.

The available effects inlude Chorus, Phaser, Compressor, and Waveshaper. Waveshaped IRs might be something I should give a try when I’m feeling particularly misanthropic. Finally, a preset system with randomization and a full-fletched browser is provided. It all makes for an advanced reverb processor that goes deep. The introductory price is a steal and the opportunity to upgrade to version 2 for USD 5 is just mighty fine customer treatment. Kudos!
