Free Thing! Acustica Audio Releases Free Version of its Gorgeous Synthesizer The Thing
What could be better than a stunningly gorgeous Jupiter-8 emulation? Why, that would be a FREE stunningly gorgeous Jupiter-8 emulation. Yes, Acustica Audio is giving us a free Thing.
Free Thing!
At the beginning of this month, Acustica Audio surprised everyone by releasing its first synthesizer plugin. Called The Thing, it’s an emulation of the Roland Jupiter-8. With its combination of analog circuit behavior modeling with the company’s usual convolution-based approach, the plugin sounds incredibly good.
Now Acustica Audio has gifted us with a free Thing. Called Thing-2 or TH2, it’s a two-voice version of the original synth – and yes, it sounds amazing.
Free Thing, Gorgeous Thing
Thing-2 TH2 is, essentially, a cut-down version of the original but it’s still quite capable. You get a single oscillator with four waveforms plus a sub, a multimode lowpass filter with a typical non-resonant Roland highpass filter, a single ADSR envelope with a variety of envelope curves that you can also point at the filter and even oscillator, a single LFO, a glissando control, and unison spread slider.
As with the big Thing, you can also age TH2, from 0 to 100. If you’re worried about CPU, Acustica has provided three quality levels: Normal, Mega and Eco. Even at Mega though the CPU on my 2018 i7 Mac Mini held fast.
Get Your Free Thing
This is a wonderful gift from Acustica. Thing-2 sounds great and it’s always nice to have another monosynth (duosynth?) in the arsenal – especially when it’s free.
Thing-2 is a free download from Acustica Audio. There are both direct download and installer routes, which is great to see. Get your free Thing from the link below.

Free garbage is still garbage.

Kept crashing logic. Hard pass.
