Friedman IR-X Preamp – Dual Channel Tube Preamp pedal
12AX7 Tube Tone
The Friedman IR-X Preamp is a dual-channel tube preamp. Each channel delivers the classic overtone richness and response of Dave Friedman’s best designs.
Friedman IR-X Preamp
This new Friedman IR-X Preamp pedal is based on two 12AX7 tubes and offers two channels. One channel is voiced for the Plexi-British amp tone. The second channel produces Friedman’s signature high-gain voice with plenty of clarity and sustain
It mixes an analogue tube circuit with powerful DSP-based Low Latency Impulse Response Cabinet Simulation technology.
Channel Controls
Each channel has controls for Gain, Bass, Middle, Treble, Volume, and Boost Volume with a footswitch to activate the boost.
Plus, a 3-Way Bright Switch (Channel 1) and a 2-Way Tight Switch (Channel 2).
On the side of the pedal, there are also two small trimmer pots for adjusting the Boost (Channel 2) and Gain (Channel 1).
Rear panel
The pedal also features an Ultra-Transparent Series FX Loop and a built-in DSP IR speaker simulator on a balanced out for use with a DAW setup or mixing console.
It also has a headphone output on the rear panel, along with USB and MIDI, plus a ground lift switch.
Impulse Response
The Impulse Responses can be loaded via USB and users can use different ones for each of the two channels.
The IR-X includes Dave Friedman’s favourite cabinet IRs as standard. Users can download the IR-X software to then add their own IRs and tweak it to taste.
The three-position CAB/IR Select Switch per channel is programmable via the software and so once loaded, it is easy to switch between favourites.
Users can completely bypass the cabinet simulation as well, which is always welcome and makes this even more versatile.
IR-X Software
The Friedman IR-X Editor software allows users to tweak each channel’s power amp simulation via the thump and presence controls, load their favourite IRs, activate the Boost Lock feature, select loop ON/OFF and save it all to 128 MIDI presets
The package includes a universal 12V power supply and a 6-foot USB 2.0 A Male to B Male cable.
Verdict
This new dual-channel tube preamp looks like it is well thought out and the demo video below sounds good. Price-wise it offers a lot of great tones and is flexible enough to cover a lot of ground, so should be good value for money for many guitarists.
