Fulltone OCD v2 CME Limited Edition Black: Paying more for a new paint job?
Back in black
The Fulltone OCD pedal is unquestionably one of the most popular overdrives out there, especially for the milder drive tones. Fulltone recently presented a second version with a few improvements. Now follows a very exclusive limited version in black.
OCD CME Exclusive Limited Edition Black
The ubiquitous OCD pedal has had a white/cream livery for years. Chicago Music Exchange has now commissioned a special version, which is distributed only in its own shop. A completely black OCD, an unusual sight.
Inside, there are no changes. Only the outside case is painted differently. The all-black colour scheme looks like a reverse of the regular OCD edition. Pots, switches, screws, connectors – everything is in the same position and it is really just a different paint job, nothing more.
US import: Yes or no?
So, is this worth buying? If you live in the USA, you’re paying USD 159 instead of USD 127.50 for the regular version. Is this paint job worth 32-odd dollars? You decide.
But if you live outside America, it’s more complicated. CME will deliver to you but because the company is based in the USA, you’ll end up picking this up from customs. If, say, you’re from Germany and you go to the CME site, they quote you a price including shipping in the region of EUR 163.97. Wait, you say, that’s cheaper than ordering the regular OCD V2 in Europe! Not so fast. There are local import taxes and probably customs duties to pay, too, that will push up the price for you.
So, if you’re outside the US and you’ve always wanted to have a real OCD pedal in black, then you’ll probably need to spend some extra money for customs duties and/or import taxes. Unless you’ve always dreamed of owning an OCD in black, stick with the regular white/cream model. Sonically, there is no difference anyway, so I’d have to pass on this one.
RRP: USD 159 (plus shipping/taxes/duties outside the US)
