Gibson RD Custom Ebony: Cult Classic Returns
With a 25.5” scale length and plenty of attitude!
The Gibson Custom Shop has unveiled the RD Custom, bringing a cult favorite into its core lineup for the first time. This guitar delivers a blend of vintage aesthetics and modern playability.
Gibson RD Custom Ebony
Initially launched in 1977, the Gibson RD has carved a niche with its distinctive design, drawing inspiration from the iconic Explorer and Firebird models. Its unique look and sonic versatility have made it a go-to instrument for numerous guitarists across various genres.
Norlin
This Norlin-era model is revered by aficionados, often copied by boutique builders and favoured by players who like down-tuned heavy riffing.
This model has become somewhat of a cult guitar among guitarists. Epiphone versions have been made in recent years, including the Lee Malia model in 2017. Now, it is back and available as a Custom in a cool Ebony nitro finish.
Custom Shop
This new iteration marks a significant milestone: the first Custom Shop-built RD model and the first 25.5” scale length solid-body core model offered by Gibson Custom. This longer scale length is perfect for players who like drop tunings and demand a tighter, more resonant low-end response, which is ideal for crafting those earth-shattering riffs.
The RD Custom boasts a mahogany body with multi-ply top binding, maintaining the classic and comfortable RD body shape. It is complete with a rear tummy cut for enhanced comfort.
Lavish Custom cosmetics elevate its appeal, featuring gold hardware, mother-of-pearl block inlays on the neck, and a Custom split diamond headstock inlay.
The 25.5” scale mahogany neck sports a Medium C profile and a long neck tenon, ensuring exceptional stability and sustain. A bound ebony fretboard with 22 medium jumbo frets provides a smooth and responsive playing surface, while the bound headstock is equipped with reliable Grover Rotomatic tuners.
Twin Humbucker
Under the hood, the RD Custom is powered by a dynamic duo of 490R and 498T pickups, delivering a wide range of tonal possibilities, from warm, smooth cleans to searing, high-gain tones. The electronics package includes CTS potentiometers and a hand-wired harness.
Verdict
Whether you’re drawn to its unique design, the extended scale length, or the exceptional craftsmanship of the Gibson Custom Shop, the RD Custom promises a playing experience that stands out.
The only downside is the price, which is £4999. This model is a bit too expensive for what it offers. Many RD-style guitars are on the market, but this one is way too expensive. Essentially, this is a twin humbucker guitar with a 25.5″ scale length, and the marketplace is already flooded with those.
I personally love the design, but I would have to opt for something which offers more value for money.
