Give your mix some polish with the Neve-inspired Need 31102 preamp and EQ plug-in
NoiseAsh’s soft spot for analog equalizers sees the developer go after the Neve 8068 console’s 31102 preamp & eq module. Hailed as one of the best-sounding units of its kind, the combo has been recreated and enhanced in the Need 31102 Console pre/EQ emulation.
The original three-band design sees the addition of an extra mid band and Dirt saturation switch, as well as a Mid / Side processing option for individual equalization of mid and side stereo content. The mic preamp model’s Drive mode offers a 30dB range, and filter crosstalk has been modeled as well. This should make for an authentic-sounding representation of the coveted circuit.
Additionally, the plug-in has an anti-aliasing engine with oversampling option alongside a resizable GUI.
The Neve 8068 console has imparted its thick, warm sonic character on plenty of rock and metal records by the likes of Guns N Roses, AC/DC, RHCP, Nirvana, and Metallica among many others. While there are many ways to cop the Neve sound digitally, I’m not sure if there are any emulations of the 31102 module in particular. This makes the Need 31102 a valuable plug-in for tone chasers.
Price and availability
Need 31102 is being sold for an introductory price of USD 60, down from USD 120. The plug-in is available in VST, AU, and AAX formats for 32- and 64-bit Windows and Mac computers. A demo version can be downloaded from the NoiseAsh website.
