GRANULIZER 2: More grains, more granular, more spectral widening and chaos
Inertia Sound Systems has completely redesigned their GRANULIZER granular synthesis software synthesizer and now version is ready to “add a possibility of endless sounds to your arsenal.”
GRANULIZER 2
They say that everything is better than before. You now have control over grain size, speed, envelope shape, pitch and timing randomisation. The interactive waveform display lets you zoom in to individual cycles and loop sections with a drag of the mouse. I am enjoying the knob labelled “Magic” as that’s pretty much my understanding of granular synthesis.
The granular “Warp” section features a feedback modulation system with controls for Smear, Smooth and Depth. It brings in atonal variations and feels like a second oscillator. The “Hive” section of GRANULIZER 2 is a diffusion delay with zero delay feedback analogue modelled filters with saturation, infinite feedback, control over diffusion amount, size, width and mix. At the end is an FX module which has spectral processing per grain, frequency shifting and sharpness, shape and spread modulation.
It looks fresh, clean and a little bit icy. Granular synthesis can get a bit muddy and confusing in terms of the control system but the GUI here is refreshingly clear and lovely to look at.
Here’s a track made entirely with GRANULIZER 2 and some nice images of Athens from the Inertia Sound Systems office window.

They could do with a bit more of a tutorial and demonstration video. But the good news is that you can download it and try it for yourself for free. If you like it then it’s currently on a special of €40 (usually €80).
