Delays can be simple and satisfying, they can also be obscenely deep and just as satisfying! I like both depending on how I feel. Magic Delay is a solo release from Tonsturm collaborator and DSP wizz Gustav Scholda. Gustav put his mind to making a crazy complex delay approachable and creative. Here’s more about Magic Delay…

The developer describes MagicDelay as a multi-curve spectral delay with a built-in modulation system. The delay engine lets you separate delay times per frequency, which means controlling potentially tens of thousands of delay times. Yet, you can mix, modulate, spread, and otherwise manipulate delays to your heart’s content.

How does that work out? MagicDelay has a Curve Editor where you can draw up to 4 curves and morph between them from an XY pad. These are tried and tested control paradigms for complex effects and synthesizers. So chances are you’ll be felling quite comfortable with Magic Delay in not a lot of time.

Furthermore, delay times can be sync’d to your DAW which makes some interesting rhythmic combinations possible without extensive effort. For example, you can pull off a regular eighth note delay for the low-mid frequencies and a dotted eighth delay for the highs. Or any other combination you can think of, even if it’s on the brink of insanity.

The second important aspect of Magic Delay is its modulation system. It’s a deep one with all the LFOs, random generators, and envelope followers (amplitude, pitch, brightness, etc.) you can think of. The followers can even respond to side-chain inputs, making it possible to modulate the delay from external audio tracks (or even specific frequencies from them).
