Guild Surfliner HH: New twin humbucker offset models
Twin humbucker offset announced
The new Guild Surfliner HH is the latest version of their Surfliner offset line and now comes with twin humbucking pickups. They offer some bolder tones with plenty of variation and all at a very affordable price point.
Surfliner HH
These new Guild Surfliner HH are similar to the previous single-coil models. Just now they come with twin humbuckers instead. They have poplar offset body styles, a C-profile maple neck with a matching maple fretboard and 21 frets, on a 648 mm scale plus an oversized headstock.
The two new variants come in two fresh colours: Shoreline Mist and Canyon Dusk. I think the colours suit the shape of these models and it is great to see more variations added to this lineup.
The string-thru body design is paired with an adjustable Tune-o-Matic-style bridge. This, I would gues, should help with string sustain and offer a good solid base for tuning stability. Keeping it simple and making for a rock-solid tone.
Humbuckers & Splits
They now come equipped with the aforementioned Guild HB-2 humbuckers – hence the HH in the name. These can be split via the push/pull tone pot and made to sound like a faux single coil. I’m guessing this will appeal to a lot of players and it also makes them pretty versatile.
Again, as with the previous single coil models from 2022, these have a set of sliders above the strings. These have two positions: on and off. Allowing you to turn on each pickup individually.
Verdict
These new HH models look like the natural progression for this range. If you like the retro offset styling, but need humbuckers, you have limited choices compared to Strats and Teles.
These certainly give players options and I look forward to seeing some reviews from owners once they get their hands on them. I kind of like the styling myself and the control layout is pretty simple when compared to the 2022 models as they had 7 pickup combinations on offer via three switches. Whereas here you have volume, tone, splits and two on/off switches, so life is far simpler. Yet you still have more tonal options at your disposal with 8 on offer..
Price
The Guild Surfliner HH is 529 euros* a little more than the other models that cost 399 or 449 euros*.
