Guitar Gear Gems: Kurt Cobain Sky Stang 1 sells for over $1.5 million
Cobain's Sky Stang 1 sells at auction
This week on Guitar Gear Gems we check out the Kurt Cobain Sky Stang 1 which just sold for over $1.5 million. Then we take a look at the new Taylor Beacon five-in-one guitar accessory.
Kurt Cobain Skystang 1
The Fender Kurt Cobain Fender Mustang which is known as The Sky Stang 1 has just sold for $1,587,500 at Julien’s Auctions in Nashville over the weekend on 18 November 2023. It was one of 10 left-handed Japanese Mustang models that Cobain had made for the In Utero tour and was his favourite one of the batch.
The V
It is certainly a fan favourite and can be recognised by the distinct yellow ‘V’ shape on the red tortoiseshell pickguard, and a white humbucker in the bridge position.
The guitar was also used on Nirvana’s MTV Live and Loud show in December 1993 and had been on display at Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture.
Million Dollar Plus Cobain Guitars
Yet another Kurt Cobain guitar that has broken the million-dollar sale price.
Though not quite as high as the Competition Stripe Mustang from the Smells Like Teen Spirit video, which sold for $4,5 million. Or the Martin D-18E, as seen on the MTV Unplugged in New York show, as that guitar fetched $6,010,000 in 2020.
Thankfully, Fender makes a few Kurt Coban models, so you don’t need to spend that much to achieve the look and tone of his guitars.

Taylor Beacon
The Taylor Beacon is a USB-rechargeable tuner, metronome, timer, countdown clock, and has a built-in flashlight. Making it a pretty versatile accessory for guitarists. The main face has a nice TFT colour LCD screen that makes it simple to navigate.
Affordable
Having all those functions on one piece of gear makes it a real gig bag essential and it is also super affordable. Having a torch is a major plus for me when out and about, as stages are often dark so this would be super useful for me. The built-in timer range goes up to 99 minutes and 59 seconds and it can also countdown, with an audible alarm at the end.
It covers Chromatic, Guitar, Bass, Violin, and Ukulele tuning modes and the metronome has 12 pre-set time signatures and an adjustable range from 30 to 208 bpm.
MSRP – EUR 49
EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath V3 BM Custom
The new EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath V3 BM Custom is a custom colour edition of the Afterneath V3 and has just been released. It is now available in this bright blue and pink finish for a limited time.
Otherworldly Reverbs
The reverbs are described by EQD as ”cavernous reverbs, or scattered, short, rhythmic delays” and so that should give you an idea of what to expect from this pedal.
