Guitar Gear Gems: QOTSA Solid State preamp pedal and more
A selection of preamps and amps in pedal format
The QOTSA style Solid State preamp from Acorn Amplifiers is the latest slimmed-down pedal from the company. Then we check out the revamped SolidGoldFX bass preamp pedal, the BETA-V. Finally, we check out the new Laney Ironheart Loudpedal amp in a pedal.
Acorn Amplifiers
Acorn Amplifiers Solid State preamp pedal is a smaller take on their previous work. Based on the Peavey practice amp supposedly used by QOTSA frontman Josh Homme.
It features Normal and Saturated channels as foot-switchable tone modes.
Thick Switch
It comes with a Thick switch, between the Post and Pre knobs for adding girth to your tone. Along with a comprehensive three-band EQ section.
This new slimmer version of the pedal runs on 9-18 V DC power and is a true bypass design. It is also quite a bit cheaper than the original version and around $120 cheaper.
MSRP – USD 179

SolidGoldFX BETA-V
The SolidGoldFX BETA-V is the company’s revamped bass preamp pedal. The stompbox now offers a wider range of tones. The low-pass filter now has two settings for mid-humped or scooped mids. As well as a centre bypass setting for a more transparent experience.
Active EQ
It also has an active 2-band post-gain EQ allowing players to boost or cut highs and lows with a nice flat response. Plus, the drive control has been revised for applications with lower gain applications or hotter basses.

Ironheart Loudpedal
Finally, the new Laney Ironheart Loudpedal is a two-channel 60-watt amp in a pedal. Channel 1 features selectable Clean/Rhythm/Lead gain levels, whilst Channel 2 features Bright, Natural and Dark voicings.
Amp or Pedal?
Both of the amp channels share a three-band passive EQ, as well as a foot-switchable boost. There is also an effects loop for time-based effects, plus a speaker-emulated XLR out.
The amp will power a speaker cabinet and it will also function as a boost/drive/distortion pedal. The pedal requires a 24-volt power supply capable of providing 2.5 amps so that it can run at the full 60 watts of power.
