Guitar Gear Gems: Taylor Urban Ironbark & D’Angelico Baritones
New acoustic tone woods and two new baritones
This week on Guitar Gear Gems we take a peek at the new D”Angelico Guitars Deluxe Atlantic Baritone and Deluxe SS Baritone models. The New York-based company’s first foray into baritone electrics. But first, we have a look at the new Taylor Guitars’ Urban Ironbark redesigned 500 series models.
Urban Ironbark
Urban Ironbark, also known as Red Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus Sideroxylone), is one of more than 700 eucalyptus species that occur worldwide. Taylor’s partnership with West Coast Arborists provides access to selected urban trees in Southern California.
Tonewood
These new Taylor Urban Ironbark 500 Series use this tonewood to great effect, and it offers players a more sustainable material, which still has plenty of desirable acoustic properties.
This new tonewood has a physical density comparable to ebony and at the same time offers the sound depth and abundance of Indian rosewood. The guitars each include a roasted Sitka spruce top, paired with Taylor’s V-Class bracing. The result can be described as a fresh variation of the classic spruce/rosewood sound with the help of Taylor’s modern acoustic technology. The improved volume and projection of the guitar are immediately recognizable even with a lighter stroke.

New models of the 500 series: 514ce and 512ce
The back and sides are stained and that deepens the natural reddish and golden brown shades of the ironbark, while the body and neck have a slightly shaded edge burst. Further details are the new ‘aerial inlays’ made of Italian acrylic, the binding and pickguard made of tortoiseshell as well as a single-breasted abalone rosette with maple and black border. Both models have integrated ES2 electronics and a mahogany neck with Taylor-nickel tuners.
D’Angelico Baritones
D”Angelico Guitars has just launched their very first baritone, electric guitar models, the Deluxe Atlantic Baritone and Deluxe SS Baritone. The Deluxe SS Baritone is a semi-hollow model available in Satin Trans Wine and Satin Honey. Whilst the Deluxe Atlantic Baritone is a solid-body single-cut design, available in Solid Black and Satin Walnut finishes.

Classic Humbucker
Next up is the Deluxe Atlantic Baritone and this has a solid alder body and a set maple neck with a 14″ radius ebony fretboard. Instead of P90s, this model has a set of Seymour Duncan Seth Lover A4 humbucking pickups, which should offer some warm classic humbucker tones.
