Guitar Gear Gems: VS Audio Platinum & Humanoid Pedals Entity
New Marshall Silver Jubilee-style overdrive
This week on Guitar Gear Gems we check out the new VS Audio Platinum Overdrive that emulates a classic Marshall Silver Jubilee all-tube amp head. Then we take a peek at the new Humanoid Pedals Entity, a germanium-based overdrive from North Carolina. These two very different takes on overdrive could be perfect for achieving great guitar tones.
VS Audio Platinum Overdrive
The new VS Audio Platinum Overdrive is handmade in Athens, Greece and comes in a brushed stainless steel enclosure. This pedal is based on the Marshall Silver Jubilee amp model produced in 1987.
The Platinum features hand-selected discrete JFETS that give a distinctive blend of classic Plexi and high-gain Marshall-style amp tones.
Silver Jubilee
There is an Input Gain to control the amp-like overdrive and this goes from sparkly clean to the fully cranked tube-style saturation if so desired. There is also a dedicated Channel Switch to choose between Rhythm and Lead channels, just like those on the original Marshall amp heads.
It also emulates the unique Bass, Middle and Treble tone stack of those much sought-after British tube amps and a Presence Switch which then adjusts negative feedback or can be used to boost high frequencies.
The pedal features top-mounted jacks, plus true bypass and silent relay switching.
MSRP – EUR 229 *

Humanoid Pedals Entity
Next up is the Humanoid Pedals Entity germanium preamp overdrive and this one has what is described as a transparent and harmonically rich mid-focussed drive tone.
They are handmade in North Carolina and use audio-grade components throughout.
NOS Glass Germanium
This pedal has a circuit with NOS glass germanium second-stage clipping diodes (as used in the Klon Centaur), that offers a nice smooth and potentially very sweet drive at the top end. Perfect for medium overdrive and crunch, with nice thick harmonics and great sustain.
Though Humanoid Pedals specifically state that this is not a Klon Centaur-style circuit.
The controls consist of Volume, Drive and Tone which should make it easy to dial in and certainly makes it user-friendly.
It runs on 9V standard power and will not power from a battery. This pedal is also a true bypass design.
MSRP – Currently on sale for GBP 106, normally GBP 122 / USD 149
