GYRINX VCF: a filter pulled from the heart of the Synton SYRINX
GYRINX is a painstakingly realized design informed by the known original topology of incomplete schematics, datasheets, and designs from other synths of the era of the Synton SYRINX.
GYRINX
It’s a voltage-controlled filter that attempts to replicate the character and esoteric filtering experience of the Synton SYRINX monosynth from 1983. The filter has a formant section comprised of two 2-pole resonant bandpass and one 4-pole resonant lowpass contours. The resultant 3 formant frequencies have a very human voice quality to them and are described as “Wowwww” and “Yeahwa”!
GYRINX reproduces the filter in a Eurorack module based on two Alfa AS3350 reissued filter chips which are clones of the original CEM3350 design. You have 4 audio inputs with attenuators which can be summed or split into two pairs. The filters can then be used in series or parallel routing. The entire signal path is analog with a little bit of digital control over the routing.
For modulation you can control the cutoff frequency of both filters from the 2 CV inputs or take control of the overall frequency tracking via the single “KBD” input.
The GYRINX VCF follows the look of the black version of the original with some very handy graphics showing the routing options. Having 3 peaks to play with gives you an awful lot of sonic potential. In the video (below) you really get a sense of that human vocal quality.
GYRINX VCF should be available in early September for €296.
