Haunted Labs Old Ruin: A distortion with a unique Texture control
With textures of mayhem?
Haunted Labs’ latest pedal, evocatively named Old Ruin, offers a spectrum of distortion tones, from overdrive to high gain dirt, in one compact pedal. The super simple layout belies its versatility.
Haunted Labs Old Ruin Distortion
We covered the Haunted Labs last year when they released Hell Horse Fuzz Delay in collaboration with Dirty Haggard Audio. Now the company has released Old Ruin, a distortion pedal billed as a “user-friendly recipe for mayhem”. Sounds intriguing!
Texture Tone Shaper
The pedal has a super-simple control layout consisting of Volume, Gain and Texture. The first two knobs are self-explanatory but it’s the Texture control where things get interesting. Haunted Labs says:
“Texture is much more than just an earthly tone control. It summons sonic nuances from the great beyond. Looking for something silky and stealthy? You’ll find it here. Prefer a stinging, searing experience like a face full of lava? Twist the Texture knob, wake up and smell the brimstone.”
The website goes on to talk about a “broad array of distorted deliciousness, ranging from a somewhat mild overdrive all the way to higher-gain howling”. Judging by the demos, the character seems quite aggressive – in a good way.
If you are looking for a distortion pedal that does things a bit differently and will give you some tonal versatility, this one is worth checking out. I can see this pedal being popular with players that want something a little different from the norm. Old Ruin has standard 9V DC power and is true-bypass, so it will play nicely with most pedalboard setups. You can hear it in action in the videos linked below.
RRP – USD 159
