HoRNet ELM128 MK2: the EBU R128 loudness meter gets an update
HoRNet Plugins has released ELM128 MK2, an improved new version of the EBU R128 compliant loudness meter. With five different loudness measurements, ELM128 MK2 offers a wide range of metering options for broadcasting, music production and mastering.
HoRNet Plugins ELM128 MK2
ELM128 MK2 supports mono, stereo and 5.1 surround metering. It offers five metering modes: momentary, short-term, integrated, dynamic range and true peak. Momentary measures the loudness of the last 400 milliseconds, while short-term looks at the last 3 seconds. In integrated mode, the meter displays the recorded loudness since the beginning of the measurement, but discards long sections of silence and the highest passages in a long program. Range displays the loudness range of the program in LU, while true peak shows the maximum level of the signal in dBFS using 4x oversampling.
Additionally, ELM128 MK2 offers a normalization function. It adjusts the gain in real time so that no signal exceeds the reference set by the user. This feature is available in the EBU R128 compliant momentary, short-term and integrated modes. According to HoRNet Plugins, this helps to reduce the difference in the perceived levels of different programs.
Futhermore, the plug-in features a history graph, which gives an overview of the loudness over time and can reach as far back as 12 hours. ELM128 MK2 also allows you to save and recall presets, and the interface is resizable. If you can make do without some of their advanced features, ELM128 MK2 looks like a useful and inexpensive alternative to plug-ins like Signum Audio Bute and MasterCheck Pro.
Price and compatibility
HoRNet Plugins ELM128 MK2 is available for Windows Vista or newer and macOS 10.7 or newer. It comes in VST, VST3, AU and AAX formats (64 bit).
The plug-in costs EUR 14.99. Owners of the original ELM128 plug-in can upgrade to the new version for EUR 1.99. There is no demo version, but HoRNet Plugins says that it’ll refund the purchase price if you don’t like it.
