Wondering how to sell your synth presets? Here are nine sites to host your patches and make some money.

There are many ways to make money from your music. Some are straightforward, like writing songs and getting royalties from sales and streaming. Others are more like side hustles, like making sample packs, starting a YouTube channel or teaching online music classes. One of the biggest, though, is making synth presets.

Also known as patches, synth presets are meant as inspiration for hardware and software synth owners. Not everyone wants to program their own sounds; if you like doing this, you can sell your patches for extra money – or, if you’re successful enough, make it into a full-time career.

Until you get big enough to get commissions from developers, you’ll need to find a way to sell your preset packs. There are two main kinds of sites for this. Dedicated market sites will take a commission, but they have the advantage of marketing and traffic. On the other hand, you can create your own online presence. You’ll get to keep all the money, but finding customers could be difficult. The best option could be a little of both, with exclusives on different sites and non-exclusives as well.

Today, let’s look at nine sites for selling your own synth patches.

Sell Synth Presets: The Patchbay

The Patchbay is a large, creator-focused site selling everything from sample packs and plugins to synth patches. They claim over 12000 users, with presets for many popular synths like u-he Diva and Hive 2, and Xfer Serum. There are also hardware synth presets, unusual for most of the sites in this list, with Espen Kraft a notable contributor.

Sellers on The Patchbay receive a guaranteed 65% net from exclusive sales and 60% net from non-exclusive ones, with weekly payments. See their terms for a more detailed breakdown of royalties.

Sell Synth Presets: Wavetick

Wavetick is the newest user-contributor market on the internet and was founded by musician Sharooz Raoofi, who also started Sample Magic. It has a definite beat focus, although it also sells samples, MIDI files and presets

Wavetick is very upfront about its commission and claims to be the lowest in the business. You can set your own price and Wavetick will take 12.5%, less sales tax and payment provider fees. Payment is sent within 48 hours of a sale.

Sell Synth Presets: Producer Loops

Producer Loops boasts that it’s the world’s largest sample pack retailer. As with other sample pack sites, it also sells synth presets. A quick look at the Presets page reveals patches for Vital, Omnisphere, Massive and more.

For vendors, Producer Loops takes a 50% commission after tax and affiliate payouts but does not deduct payment or other fees. It only handles non-exclusive packs. Payments are sent out monthly.

Sell Synth Presets: ADSR

ADSR is something of a one-stop shop for music production, with everything from third-party plugins and production courses to samples and, yes, presets. In terms of patches, ADSR has a lot, for everything from Baby Audio Transition to Native Instruments’ Massive X.

ADSR reportedly does accept vendors, but unfortunately, the Sell Your Sounds page is currently broken. There’s also no information on commission rates or terms. If you’re interested, the best bet is to contact the site via the Contact Us page.

Sell Synth Presets: Splice

Splice is probably the best-known sample provider online. While its bread and butter is sample packs, it also offers presets.

The company doesn’t advertise its terms, but it is open to synthesists getting in contact. Fill out their Creator Review Submission form if you’re interested.

Sell Synth Presets: Loopmasters

Loopmasters is another popular sample and preset provider. Preset packs often include additional content, like wav loops and MIDI files.

Loopmasters apparently accepts inquiries from new vendors, but there is no information about terms on its site that I could find. If you fancy selling on Loopmasters, get in touch through the site.

Sell Synth Presets: Your Own Site

If you’d rather sell your presets directly to customers, you’ll need to create your own online store. Gumroad is by far the most popular for this with synth preset makers. The site takes 10% plus $0.50 from general transactions, or 30% when a sale is made through the discover marketplace

Another option is Patreon. Although you may think of it as a site for supporting artists with monthly payments, you can also use it to sell digital goods. Patreon takes 5% of monthly sales earnings plus payment processing, as well as eight or 12 percent from your subscriptions, depending on the tier you choose.

Synth preset maker Dream Static uses Patreon along with Gumroad to sell their patches. “With Patreon, you can have a good old-fashioned store on your page as well as your posting and subscription stuff,” they said.

Lastly, there’s also Bandcamp. If you already have a presence there as a musician, you could also add “albums” of synth presets. Bandcamp takes 15% of all digital sales plus payment processor fees.

What synths should you make presets for? If you’re after the largest audience, that would probably be Serum by Xfer, although there are already many, many Serum packs out there. Other popular software synths include Vital, Arturia Pigments, and Diva and Hive 2 from u-he.

If you’re thinking hardware, you’ll probably want to sell these packs on your own or via The Patchbay, as most other sites don’t feature hardware. A quick look through The Patchbay shows preset packs for the Novation Bass Station II, Sequential Prophet-6, and Arturia MicroFreak.

Never heard of any of the sites here.

I buy directly from creators, or from the vast selection available at lfo.store.

For Elektron instruments I refer to the curated lists of sound packs on Elektronauts.com (search for “definitive list”).
