[19 February 2025] AI hardware developer Humane has officially announced that the much-hyped and much-tweeted Ai Pin will be discontinued less than a year after its release. The $700 device, which was originally marketed as a portable AI assistant, will go completely offline at 12:00 noon Pacific Time on February 28, 2025. All features such as telephony, messaging, AI queries, and cloud services will be unavailable. Users will have to back up their saved photos, videos and notes via a Wi-Fi connection until then, as all data will be permanently deleted after the shutdown. That doesn’t sound very user-friendly.

Buyers Disappointed: Humane Discontinues AI Gadget and Offers Few Refunds

This drastic decision coincides with the sale of Humane to HP. The tech giant is acquiring the CosmOS AI platform, more than 300 patents and much of the workforce for $116 million. But that doesn’t mean the Ai Pin has a future under new management. Instead, the device is being permanently discontinued, and HP seems more interested in the technologies and patents than in developing the wearable assistant.

For most customers, there will be no refunds (excuse me?), even if their Ai Pin has been in use for less than a year. Only buyers who are still within the 90-day return period or who purchased the device after November 15, 2024 will receive a refund. However, all requests must be submitted no later than February 27, 2025. If you can no longer use your Ai Pin, Humane says you should dispose of it through an e-waste recycling program, as it can only display rudimentary offline information such as battery level after it is turned off.

Big AI Promise Ends With a Quick Exit

The short life of the Ai Pin shows that even ambitious AI products can fail if they don’t meet user expectations. Although Humane attracted attention with innovative AI technology, the company apparently failed to achieve sustainable success. HP will now focus on developing the CosmOS platform, while the Ai Pin will go down in AI gadget history as a failed experiment. More information about the product’s discontinuation can be found on the official Humane website.

All in all, this is really bad news for users who invested in this company – in other words, who bought such AI hardware. This “revolution” seems to have backfired. It’s a shame.

As much as I enjoy watching the demise of venture capitalism funded AI hardware companies, can I ask what this has to do with music tech?

It is (was) a music device for listening/streaming music.

So is the majority of consumer electronics these days… I thought this site was about gear for making music?

And nowadays it is possible to use consumer electronics, esp. AI, to make music. Pro musicians also use consumer electronics, esp. headphones (in-ears for example), to listen to music (or to produce music in the wild). That’s why we are talking about that. Same goes for consumer laptops, computers, etc.

Okay, to me there is a clear difference between laptops and headphones on one side (both are clearly tools used in music production) and a glorified robo pin which – let’s face it – no „pro“ musician is going to use to earn their income (I presume that is what you mean with „pro“). But as the editor-in-chief, I’m sure you have a good idea of what your site‘s visitors are interested in. For what it’s worth, as someone who frequently reads and enjoys Gearnews, I hope your output will remain relevant and to the point in an internet which is increasingly crowded.

Ha! Ha! Ha! Hopefully everything else AI-related will fail as well. These companies are all thieves and anti-human monsters. I wish nothing but the worst for them.
