IK Multimedia iRig Pre 2: mic preamp for digital cameras and mobile devices
IK Multimedia announced the sequel to its iRig Pre portable preamp and interface for content creators anywhere. The iRig Pre 2 fits a decent mic pre with 48V phantom power and XLR input in a tiny battery-powered unit meant for recording with mobile devices and digital cameras. The analog-to-digital conversion is handled by your device’s built-in converters, which tend to be reasonably good nowadays – even great, in high-end smartphones.
IK Multimedia iRig Pre 2
The iRig Pre 2 is an all-around improvement of the original unit. IK Multimedia added a headphone output with volume control for direct monitoring, and auto-switching circuitry which activates when you plug into a digital camera. No connection hassles! However, the iRig Pre 2 has no digital connections. It connects to your camera and smart devices over a typical 3.5mm TRRS audio jack. If your phone doesn’t have one, you will need an adapter.
Power is supplied by a pair of AA batteries. They are good for 7 hours of recording with 48V phantom power, and as many as 20 hours without. Another convenience is the velcro strip slot used to attach the iRig Pre 2 to whatever mic stand or surface you want.
That’s all nice and good, but mind that the iRig Pre 2 only offers up to 48dB of gain. That’s enough for most condenser microphones, but it’s not going to cut it for some dynamic and ribbon mics. Make sure 48dB will be enough for yours, or use a mic booster.
Price and availability
The iRig Pro 2 will be available from March, priced EUR 50 excluding VAT. The scope of delivery includes the preamp and a 40cm (15.75-inch) TRRS cable.
