One thing quite a few amp modelers are missing is the “amp-in-a-room” feel. A miked speaker in a studio creates a sense of depth that not every pedal in this category can simulate. IK Multimedia’s ToneX Cab might be the ideal solution for that. The FRFR speaker has an IR loader and a special amp tone dial that creates said tone. And it’s loud too.

IK Multimedia ToneX CAB: FRFR Speaker with IR-Loader

The ToneX Cab weighs in at a mere 12.7 kg. Its 350-watt RMS / 700-watt peak (Class-D) power rating allows for a maximum SPL of 132 dB. Holy cow. A full-range flat-response (FRFR) speaker with so much power behind it could be the ideal partner for ToneX and ToneX One pedals, whether on stage or in the studio.

The speaker also comes with an IR loader, which you can set up onboard or via the TONEX Cab Control software to load new IRs. Let’s hope this software is a bit easier to use than the usual ToneX software that you need to control the Tonex pedals. Movong right along, multiple ToneX Cabs can be combined into stereo rigs or multi-stacks.

The closed-back speaker features a 12-inch Custom Celestion speaker with a 1-inch high-performance compression driver. 12-inchers in this price range that produce that much sound pressure are rare, so it will be interesting to see how well it performs. On paper, though, it all sounds pretty impressive!

Amp Tone and EQ

Turning up the amp tone control creates the aforementioned “amp-in-the-room” effect. For further customization, a three-band EQ adjusts the bass, midrange, and treble in the output signal to the acoustic conditions. IR, Amp Tone, and EQ settings can be stored in eight presets.

You can access these via the preset dial or via MIDI using the MIDI input on the back. In addition to the usual input jack for connecting an amp modeler to the cab, there is an additional auxiliary input whose volume can be adjusted separately.

IKM has also opted for combo inputs, i.e. XLR or line, which can be quite handy. In terms of signal output, there is an XLR output with an optional ground lift and the option to route the signal before or after the cab (pre/post). Two tilt-back metal legs are also included to align the speaker on stages better. Pretty versatile!

How much does the Tonex Cab cost?

If you want to take it to the next level visually, the grill can be exchanged to a silver or gold one from IKM. The Tonex Cab costs 799 euros at Thomann*.
