Impact Soundworks Bass Sculptor: One-stop shop for low end shaping
Impact Soundworks has released Bass Sculptor, a new multi-effect plug-in for shaping and cleaning up your mixes and bass tracks. With four distinct modules, Bass Sculptor helps to manage low frequencies and shape your sound without a complex chain of plug-ins.
Impact Soundworks Bass Sculptor
For the new Bass Sculptor plug-in, Impact Soundworks has teamed up with DSP programmer Jatin Chowdhury. Just in case the name doesn’t immediately ring a bell: that’s the guy behind the amazing free plug-ins by Chowdhury DSP, including Chow Tape Model, Chow Matrix, Chow Phaser, Chow Centaur and Chow Kick. He was apparently responsible for most or all of the DSP coding in Bass Sculptor – now that sounds very promising!
Bass Sculptor is an all-in-one solution for low frequency processing that consists of four modules, which can be activated and deactivated as needed. First is a Subharmonics Generator that synthesizes sub frequencies based on the input signal. You can adjust the cutoff frequency below which the new frequencies will be generated, and dial in the desired amount. There are also attack, decay and release controls for shaping the envelope.
Four processing modules
Next is a Bass Imager, which helps to clean up the low end by collapsing low frequencies below an adjustable frequency to mono. You can choose from three processing modes: Left, Sum, and Center. Too much stereo information in the low end can be a recipe for disaster especially in club music, and the Bass Imager takes care of that.
In the center of the GUI you’ll find a single-band equalizer with a choice of minimal and linear-phase modes and adjustable Q. There’s also a high pass filter that helps to get rid of low-end rumble.
Finally, a Bass Compressor provides “highly-responsive compression of bass frequencies”. Again, you can adjust the crossover frequency and dial in the desired amount and style of compression using the threshold and ratio knobs, makeup gain, attack and release.
Bass Sculptor looks like a comprehensive and easy to use tool for shaping the low end in your bass, drum and guitar tracks or even for tightening up whole mixes. I’m a huge fan of the Chowdhury DSP plug-ins, so I think it’s definitely worth checking out.
Price and compatibility
Impact Soundworks Bass Sculptor is now available for USD 59. The plug-in is available in VST3, AU and AAX formats for macOS and Windows.
