Introducing the SPL MixDream XP Mk2 and Vitalizer Mk3-T
New studio technology from SPL.
Sound Performance Lab has updated its studio line with two additions including the SPL MixDream XP Mk2 and Vitalizer Mk3-T. We take a closer look at these pro studio devices and see where they might fit into your setup.
Known for designing high-quality recording, mixing, and mastering gear, the German manufacturer SPL already has a stellar reputation throughout the industry. Each of these new studio tools is designed for a specific purpose, so let’s check out the details:
SPL MixDream XP Mk2
The MixDream XP Mk2 is the latest version of SPL’s 16-channel discrete class A summing mixer. An expandable solution like the previous model, the Mk2 has been redesigned with a completely new look front panel with a number of key feature additions.
As normal, the first four channel pairs can be summed to mono with the touch of a button. Meanwhile, now placed on either side of the output level control, you’ll find the switches to engage the variable output mode and the expansion input.
On the right-hand side of the panel, a key feature has been added that allows you to attenuate each of the last four channel pairs by 18 dB. This is incredibly useful for dealing with your effects returns which can be sent from the DAW at a higher level for more clarity and depth.
SPL Vitalizer Mk3-T
The Vitalizer Mk3-T is the latest version of this unique stereo tube processor for mixing, mastering, and live sound applications. Now with higher voltage internal circuitry, the Vitalizer offers an increased dynamic range as a result, with higher resolution controls.
All the familiar parameter knobs are still here, now in black. This includes the drive, bass sound, and bass compression controls, as well as the variable mid-hi tuning and process controls.
On the far right of the panel, a blinking light lets you know that the tube stage is warming up and will remain lit when at optimal temperature. Overall, the controls are identical so you’d have to make detailed audio comparisons to find out more details of how SPL has improved the Vitalizer.
