Is the new R-17 Dark Flame from Joyo an affordable Djent pedal?
Heavy gain tones from Joyo
Joyo has added a new effect to its R Series of pedals. The R-17 Dark Flame is a high-gain pedal and could be the perfect stompbox for budget Djent tones.
Joyo R-17 Dark Flame
This latest pedal in the R Series by Chinese manufacturer Joyo, follows on from yesterday’s King Of Kings, which is a clone of the Analog Man King Of Tone V4 overdrive pedal. The bright red R-17 Dark Flame is no subtle Bluesbreaker derived gain though, in fact, far from it. This new pedal is a fully-fledged high-gain stompbox, with an onboard three-band eq to help sculpt your tone.
Simple High-Gain
You get a simple control layout consisting of Volume, Gain, Treble, Mid and Bass, along with a three-position mini-toggle switch to choose between Dark, Bright and Off. In the official demo video below, you can see that this little red box appears to have plenty of gain on tap.
As ever with Joyo, the main website says very little about the pedal, so we don’t have a huge amount of background on its voicing options or the actual circuit. However, it could worth checking out if you like high-gain tones.
No official pricing has been announced yet, but I have heard rumours that it will retail for around €65 which is pretty reasonable. Hopefully, it won’t be too noisy and hissy. Although, I kind of expect you will need to use a noise gate if you opt for these higher gain settings with these types of pedal.
