Isovox Isomic: a dedicated microphone for the unique Isovox vocal booth
Isovox has unveiled the Isomic, a condenser microphone specifically designed for the company’s unique portable vocal booth. With an innovative triangular capsule and an astonishing frequency range, the manufacturer claims that the Isomic “captures voices like never before”. Let’s see what they’ve come up with.
Isovox Isomic
The Swedish manufacturer Isovox introduced its unique portable vocal booth back in 2017. It’s essentially a box made of several layers of acoustic material that completely encases the singer’s or speaker’s head and the microphone, promising studio-quality sound in any location. While you can of course use other microphones inside the Isovox vocal booth, the developer says that its newly designed Isomic delivers even better results.
Isomic is a condenser microphone with a triangular Ehrlund capsule and a cardioid polar pattern. The company claims that the triangular shape offers a 3x faster membrane recovery movement than circular capsules, which allows the microphone to pick up very fine details. What’s truly mind-blowing is the microphone’s extreme frequency range of 7 Hz to 87 kHz. They say that while we may not be able to hear those frequencies, they still affect the way the membrane moves. According to Isovox, this means that the Isomic delivers a more accurate and detailed sound, especially in terms of transient response. The company also states a very low noise floor of less than 7 dB (A) and a dynamic range of 115 dB.
With these impressive values, Isovox claims that the Isomic delivers a “radio ready” sound with very little processing. But the microphone also stands out because of its sleek looks. They say that it lets you “focus on the script instead of the gear”, but I’m not sure I’d be able to take my eyes off the Scandinavian design.
The Isomic is powered via phantom power. It comes with a specially designed pop filter and shock mount.
Price and availability
According to the press release, the Isomic will be available in the USA in mid-October. Europe will follow in late October or early November. The press release states a MAP (minimum advertised price) of USD/EUR 1299, while the Isovox website has the mic available for pre-order for EUR 1039. We’ll see which price they’ll ultimately settle on.
The Isovox Mobile Vocal Booth is available from Thomann.de.*
