Johnny Marr ’84 Les Paul Recreated for Charity
All proceeds will benefit the Teenage Cancer Trust
Johnny Marr has partnered with Gibson to release a limited run of hand-signed, Bigsby-equipped ’84 Les Paul Standard guitars. Only 20 of these exclusive instruments will be available, and all proceeds from their sale will go to the Teenage Cancer Trust.
Johnny Marr ’84 Les Paul Standard
The guitars are replicas of Marr’s iconic Cherry Red Gibson Les Paul Standard from 1984, the guitar he used extensively while recording The Smiths’ seminal album, Meat Is Murder.
This guitar became his primary instrument throughout his career with The Smiths and subsequent projects, including The The, The Pretenders, The Cribs, and his work with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

He teased the new model last week via social media, and today, Gibson has now released images and a statement from Marr. However, we do not know the price of these limited-run Les Pauls.
“These guitars are a faithful reproduction of my beloved 1984 Gibson Les Paul, bought in Manchester back in the day,” Marr commented. “It’s the guitar I’ve kept and used since that time on loads of different records, so I was beyond delighted to see it recreated in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust. It’s an amazing organisation that I’ve had an association with for about ten years. It’s a privilege to be involved in this good cause and I’m very glad to be affiliated with it, especially when it involves making a fantastic Les Paul.”
Limited-Run
The limited-edition guitars will be available exclusively at the Gibson Garage on Eastcastle Street in London on Friday, February 21st, starting at 11 am. Given the rarity and significance of these instruments, they are expected to sell out quickly. Many Johnny Marr fans are out there, and he has personally signed these guitars.
Supporting Young People with Cancer
An exclusive collaborative range of Teenage Cancer Trust and Gibson merchandise with a newly created design by Jamie Hewlett will also be available for those unable to purchase one of the limited-edition guitars. This collection will feature a unique design commemorating 25 years of the charity’s renowned gigs at the Royal Albert Hall.
If you want to get one of these exclusive Les Paul models, then make sure you are at the Gibson Garage next Friday, as I think they could sell pretty quickly to collectors and Johnny Marr fans.
The fact that all proceeds will benefit the Teenage Cancer Trust is enormous, and this partnership will hopefully raise lots of money and awareness for this worthwhile cause.
