Joyo JF-21 Splinter: A ProCo Fat Rat clone for very little money
Grab a four-voiced Rat clone for a bargain price!
Based on the ProCo Fat Rat, the Joyo JF-21 Splinter (TMNT reference) looks to be a pretty close clone of the popular distortion circuit. With four voices on offer, this bargain-priced rodent could be worth adding to your pedalboard setup.
Joyo JF-21 Splinter
The Joyo JF-21 Splinter distortion is almost a perfect copy of the original Fat Rat pedal. To me, it looks to be a one-to-one clone of the original circuit, but on a budget. Even the name points to the rat connotation, and is taken from the character in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle comics of the ’80s.
Fat Rat Clone?
In addition to the distortion, filter and volume controls, Joyo has also added the two toggle switches of the Fat Rat pedals. There are a total of four modes: stock and fat, as well as stock and mosfet. This makes it one of the more flexible distortions for this price point, and could be popular with anyone looking for that Fat Rat tone.
I’ve put a Fat Rat video demo below, for you to compare the Joyo Splinter with. Let us know what you think in the comments section below. Compared to the recent JHS PackRat pedal, this pedal is certainly a lot cheaper, but it doesn’t offer quite as many voices as the JHS.
Stomp on a Clone
However, at this price point it still offers plenty of voices. So if you’re looking for that ’80s Rat tone, with some variations, the JF-21 Splinter could be the way to go. Considering a ProCO Fat Rat will set you back around £200 in the UK, this Joyo clone could be a cheap way to get those dirty rodent tones.
