Keeley Electronics’ new Sweet Spot Johnny Hiland Super Drive Overdrive is a JFET discrete transistor-based circuit that sounds like it could be a pedal perfect to pair up with your Telecaster.
The Perfect T-Style Overdrive?
Johnny Hiland knows a thing or two about tone, especially that T-style twang that’s super popular in the States and elsewhere. Developed by Keeley, his new signature overdrive pedal is a simple three-knob design, comprising of drive, level and tone controls.
While the name is a bit of a mouthgful, the Sweet Spot Johnny Hiland Super Drive Overdrive is a nice JFET discrete transistor OD that’s simple to dial in. If you’re in the market for a functionally compact pedal to add some dirt to your Tele tone, this is one should be on your radar.

Amp-like drive tone
On top of these three basic drive controls, you also get a a two-way gain mini-toggle switch. This little switch allows the you to access everything from nice light pre-amp style clipping to full on power-tube like breakup. The aim here, Keeley says, is to provide an organic, amp-like tone throughout. Sound like it should complement a decent amp nicely. “Any T-style Tele player would just love to have this on their ‘board,” Johnny Hiland says about his new signature drive. “The left side is more for Tele-style guys who rip country to rock. Flip the switch to the right and you will find a continuation in gain.”
Limited Run
Keeley’s Sweet Spot Johnny Hiland Super Drive Overdrive is available in a limited run of only 100 pedals worldwide. If you want in on this run, you’ll need to be quick. But hopefully Mr Keeley will make it becomes a permanent fixture in his lineup.
