Kontrol Master – For real this time?
I reported back in September how the Kontrol Master controller from Touch Innovations was “finally shipping”. I was mistaken. However, I am reliably informed and reassured that this time, it really really definitely is going to be released. Definitely, this time, it’s ready to go.
Kontrol Master
Back in my other article about the Kontrol Master I talked about how they’ve managed to provide very little information. Both on what it actually does or how you’d use it. But by digging around I think I was able to pull out the core features. For the long version check out my previous article but in a nutshell, the Kontrol Master gives you a high precision knob to control parameters you would normally move with a mouse. That doesn’t sound immediately exciting but in essence, it gives you a more natural and precise way to make adjustments in your DAW or music software.
The three buttons above the knob switch between horizontal and vertical movement, like with faders, or rotational movement like with a knob. The two orange buttons beneath let you switch instantly between monitors if you have more than one – a nice navigational feature. The other buttons can be programmed with a tonne of different keyboard shortcuts, macros or commands to speed up your workflow.
It’s still putting your mouse on something and then moving your hand to use the knob to control it rather than the mouse you already have your hand on. But personally, anything that interrupts the sovereignty of the mouse is no bad thing. There are other knob controllers out there that do a similar thing. But Touch Innovations appear to have nailed it in terms of focus and functionality. It also looks fabulous!
They finally have a video that actually gives you good information about what it does (below) – hooray!
The price is a very reasonable $299 and appears to be only available direct from the USA. More information on the Touch Innovations website.
