LANDR Sessions is a new tool from the online mastering service LANDR. It’s basically a free plug-in for any DAW which you can place on the master track to stream audio and collaborate over video chat with others. And the best part is you don’t have to pay anything for the basic functionality. However, if you want a little more out of the plug-in, you have to purchase LANDR’s inexpensive subscription.

Online collaboration has become especially important amidst the global pandemic. LANDR Sessions has a relatively simple concept – load the plug-in onto your DAW’s master bus and you can start an online session straight away. The people you are collaborating with get to see your DAW and hear what comes out of it in high enough quality. You can have voice and video chat at the same time, which enables direct communication.

However, you cannot record musicians remotely or have them engage inside your DAW. Some DAWs like Cubase offer that kind of functionality, but engineering a plug-in to do that across all DAWs on all platforms is a tall order. But even in its present form, the plug-in is quite useful. For example, you can listen to your singer recording themselves over an instrumental and give them immediate feedback via video. Or simply share beautiful musical moments with your band mates and collaborators.

The developer sees other potential areas of application like online lessons, for example – others can play, sing along and produce with the stream.
