Lenovo debuts Yoga Slim 7 Carbon and Pro laptops
This week at Lenovo’s Tech World event, we saw the launch of two highly capable, lightweight laptops that will ship with Windows 11 this October. Known in the US as the IdeaPad Slim 7, the Yoga Slim 7 Carbon and Pro offer slightly more affordable and consumer-esque solutions for those looking for portability and performance in an elegantly designed package.
Yoga Slim 7 Carbon
With a 14-inch OLED display, the Yoga Slim 7 Carbon supports 8-core AMD Ryzen™ 7 5800U and Ryzen™ 5 5600U mobile processors, providing decent enough performance for basic DAW operations such as mobile recording or basic music production at home. Equipped to handle 16GB of LPDDR4x memory and up to 1TB of PCIe SSD storage, the looks well put together in its carbon fiber and magnesium alloy casing. Connectivity includes a combination of USB Type-C ports with both USB 3.2 Gen 1 and 2 standards. Only testing will tell if Lenovo’s Carbon is ready for music production, but so far the reports on Windows 11 performance have generally been positive. Arriving at a price of $1,290, it’s certainly a competitive option.
Yoga Slim 7 Pro
The larger formatted Pro version is a 16-inch IPS QHD touch display equipped laptop with almost identical specs to the Carbon version. The discrete GPU options available are expanded, as well as a few additional i/o options like the inclusion of SD card and the older USB formats. The casing allows a higher capacity battery, but the larger touch screen display is likely to even that out, especially if you choose a higher spec GPU. A starting price of $1,449 makes it an interesting prospect at the premium end of the market, but the deciding factors are likely its DAW performance and how you can integrate the touch screen functionality into your creative workflow.
As always with Windows laptops, you should check for some real-world tests with multitrack audio projects before you buy. Running DAWs and ASIO drivers for stable recording and playback can be hit and miss, so make sure that the laptop you buy will run audio apps smoothly before you take the plunge.
