Weiss is a name you’ll hear mainly in high-end audio mastering circles. Found by Daniel Weiss in Switzerland, the manufacturer has been a pioneer in digital audio equipment design since its 1985 inception. In 1979, Daniel Weiss joined Studer AG as an engineer. In 1985, Daniel founded Weiss Engineering to focus on digital audio equipment for mastering studios. The result of that endeavor is something of a legend. Weiss Engineering gear is highly specialized, well-respected, and priced accordingly. Hand-assembled in Switzerland, flagship Weiss processors start at around 8000 CHF (a bit below EUR 8000). That’s a big oof unless you’re running a major-major studio operation.
Softube’s partnership with Weiss began in 2008 with an introduction, but it wasn’t until 2015 that the two started working together in earnest. Three years later, the Softube + Weiss DS1-MK3 plug-in kicked off a series of authentic-as-they-can-be Weiss emulations. They opened up the equipment’s features and sounds to the vast majority of producers. This also makes sure the brand will get to live on outside of the upper studio echelons.
