For over 30 years the MDR-7506 has been a preferred closed-back headphone design at every level of the industry. Now, Sony is building on this legacy with a new 360 Reality Audio certified open-back model in the form of the MDR-MV1.

The Sony MDR-MV1 is built for comfort

At only 223g, the MV1 isn’t a burden during long listening sessions, and the replaceable velvety pleather pads ensure you’re comfortable throughout. The specially designed 40mm ultra-wideband drivers claim to offer 5Hz-80,000Hz frequency reproduction, which will certainly pique your interest.

The level of detail and sound quality is made possible through the specially shaped diaphragm. Meanwhile, the duct structure behind the diaphragm also plays an important role in the reproduction of low-end transient information, while separating this from the midrange.

The headphones were originally designed during lockdown for Sony engineers mixing 360 Reality content from home and are geared for the launch of Sony’s 360 Virtual Mixing Environment.

This spatial audio technology allows the acoustic field of a studio to be reproduced on headphones. As the medium is growing, this aims to meet future demand by allowing users to create spatial content anywhere without requiring multichannel speaker systems.

With an impedance rating of 24 ohms (7506 is 63 ohms), it makes them easily compatible with a wide range of consumer and mobile devices.

Overall, the MDR-MV1 should be able to cater to both demanding studio users and audiophile listeners alike. The price could raise a few eyebrows, but if the results are MDR-worthy it’s surely justified.
