Mensla’s MS-3 is an exciting experimental synthesiser available as a free download for MacOS and Windows. Following the success of the MS-2, this plugin is a flexible tool for sound experiments. The synthesiser combines hybrid synthesis methods such as subtractive approaches and FM techniques, and allows you to draw your own waveforms directly using a waveshaper. This feature allows you to develop complex, rich sound structures from a simple line by expanding and segmenting the waveform by double-clicking.
Mensla MS-3: The Perfect Synthesizer for Experimental Sounds
A special highlight of the Mensla MS-3 is the possibility to create feedback loops by feeding signals back through the synthesiser. This gives the sounds an additional characteristic and a dirtier sound. In the middle section of the GUI, the user can adjust parameters such as octave, semitone, phase shift and pitch to refine the basic oscillator sound.
The sound processing is complemented by a dual filter system consisting of a resonant low-pass filter and a non-resonant high-pass filter. An integrated multi-FX processor greatly expands the sonic possibilities. Effects such as distortion, bitcrusher, delay, reverb and a comb filter are available to further enrich or alter the sound. The distortion and comb filters in particular allow you to create extreme and unconventional soundscapes. Wow!
Hybrid Sound Designer: A Synthesizer for Creative Soundscapes
On the modulation side, the MS-3 offers two ADSR envelope generators, but no LFOs. The oversampling function allows the user to increase the sound quality, although this can put a heavy load on the CPU. The option goes up to 32 times oversampling and provides impressive sonic precision.
The GUI has been redesigned from the previous model and is now clearer and more intuitive. The MS-3 also has a visual representation of the vibration modes, although this does not work reliably in all applications. Nevertheless, the plugin impresses with its well-thought-out range of functions and creative focus. The tool is definitely a highlight for the end of the year! Thank you Mensla.
