Developer midierror has released RATCHETEER, a new device for Ableton Live 10. The device is able to generate MIDI patterns all by itself, providing new MIDI loops for your projects. This is very interesting for drums and percussion, but experimental melody lines from synthesizers are not outside its scope either.

Real-time and in sync with your DAW, the device can trigger ratcheting – a kind of quick repetition (like a drum roll), with five types of time subdivisions (triplets, whole notes, punctured notes, all together or completely free timing). It can also work with a MIDI controller.

MIDI velocity is either fixed, controlled by a random generator, or an LFO. This generates even more movement in the pattern itself. The playback speed can also be controlled from the MIDI controler, which is an interesting feature that will certainly appeal to live performers. With the MIDI map function, you can assign all parameters to your controller. Automating is possible for every parameter as well.

The device works in front of every Ableton Live instrument, but also before any VSTi. All in all, it’s a nice tool to conjure more variety and groove in your tracks.
