Midweek Modular: Asteroids, Mindphaser and ALM goes virtual
In this week’s Midweek Modular, we finally get to enjoy the Hexinverter Mindphase, mine Asteroids for snare sounds and throw a lot of Busy Circuits at VCV Rack.
Midweek Modular
In the fruit orchard of modular, these are the apples that didn’t fall too far from the tree.
ALM Busy Circuit Modules appear on VCV Rack
ALM has released a whole bunch of its Eurorack modules onto the virtual modular environment of VCV Rack. VCV Rack is a software emulation of Eurorack where you can build synths with all sorts of branded and unique modules. The new additions from ALM could make for some really interesting patches.
Premium modules include Pamela’s Pro Workout clock module, the MFX effects module, and the Tyso Daiko wavetable drum module. They are all $20 each. But don’t despair; there’s also a bundle of free ones that include an envelope, oscillator, VCA and other building-block modules.
While it does look a bit like you are giving away all the functionality for free or nearly free, the reality is that it allows people to try out modules before investing in the actual hardware. Or, it’s brilliant for people who never want to find themselves paying for modular hardware. Everybody wins. Video at the bottom.
Blue Lantern Modules Asteroid Snare Drum Mk2
More 80s arcade-inspired modules from Blue Lantern. This time, it’s the TR-606 snare drum that’s being emulated in analogue electronics. It consists of three oscillators and a noise generator forming a whole synth voice designed for snare sounds. Two oscillators create the shell of the drum, while the third looks after the thump. A filter acts on the impact and is tweaked to stick to snares.
You’ve got a lot of control over how these tones blend together to form your ultimate 606-style snare sound. Blue Lantern are at pains to say that it’s not a module for anything other than snares. You won’t get the filter to self-oscillator or the oscillators to track to 1v/oct. This is all about the snares! Video below.
Hexinverter Mindphaser and VCNO gets released by Erica Synths
Back in January, Erica Synths stepped in to save the ailing Hexinverter and took on the manufacture of the much anticipated Mindphaser. Now, finally, it’s ready.
Mindphaser is a complex dual oscillator, generating sound through a combination and collision of carrier and modulator oscillations. However, a whole section dedicated to waveshaping and intermodulation ensures that you’re going to be getting some pretty unique sounds out of this puppy.
Meanwhile, we’re also getting the VCNO, which is a noise generator. That doesn’t sound quite so interesting, but you are getting a full spectrum of white noise plus a load of other randomisations. However, you can also use it as a VCO with multiple outputs which gives it a special flavour.
