This week we have filters screaming like a banshee-possessed Polivoks, Lolita dancing drum machines and a solid-looking envelope generator.

I got quite excited about the cool-looking Bullfrog Synthesizer from Erica Synths and Richie Hawton. The whole deal with the voice card slot is very interesting in a little monophonic modular synth voice. Don’t know what I’m talking about? Read more about it here.

Squarp has taken 6 years to come up with a successor to the Hermod modular sequencer brain. The imaginatively named Hermod+ overhauls the interface and makes the whole thing more playful. Read more about that here.

We also saw the Bode Frequency Shifter from Behringer become available for preorder. This is based on a classic Moog Modular module that’s instrumental in generating the shifting timbres of modular synthesis. Read more about it here.

Here are the other interesting bits and pieces of modular awesomeness that I came across this week.

Krypt Modular Banshee

We all need a screeching Banshee glowing in our rack and Keypt Modular are happy to supply you with one. Banshee is based on the Open Source Polivoks VCF from Erica Synths and uses much more available components. It has two CV inputs with attenuators for getting stuck into that cutoff and a very useful input level control. It sounds great and is available fully assembled or as a kit.

I’ve not come across Krypt Modular before and I’m also intrigued by the Cyclops S&H/LFO, Death Nell 808 Cowbell and Butcher House Distortion. There’s a great vibe going on here.

Error Instruments Lolitas Dance

Lolitas Dance is a compact and playful trigger sequencer. It combines a bank of 10 preset rhythms with randomisation and the ability to self-patch. They rhythms emerge from three outputs that are suggested as kick, snare and hi-hat. It also has a low-pass gate built in for making use of audio coming in for more percussion sounds.

It’s interesting. I like the way you can just dial up a rhythm or find a way into it via CV. You can also mess with the speed via modulation. Simple rhythms, good value module, slightly dodgy name.

AT1 Modular Envelope Generator

It doesn’t sound like it’s very special, but the AT1 Envelope Generator is a solid piece of kit. It’s a straightforward ADSR envelope with dedicated knobs, a super-clear layout and some nice additional features. You’ve got a snappy fast mode running from 1ms to under a second and a lazier slow mode running up to 10 seconds. You can invert the output and you’ll always get an inverted version out a separate output. And lastly, it’s loopable so you can turn it into an LFO.
