Pre-orders open on Moog Werkstatt-01 analog synth kit and expander!
Moog’s compact and patchable synth-in-a-kit is back for a limited time and comes complete with an updated CV Expander for modular interaction. UPDATE: Pre-orders are now open (see links below).
Werkstatt-01
The Werkstatt-01 was originally introduced at the 2014 MoogFest as the VIP engineers workshop project. Everyone loved it so much that they persuaded Moog to release it as a commercial product. This was in a time before the Mother-32 (which you can see is an immediate descendant) and so a cheap synth from Moog was a remarkable thing.
At MoogFest the workshop version required you to solder over 200 components before putting it together. The commercially released version had all the soldering done for you and so all you had to do was put the board in the box and screw it together. Not exactly an awesome synth DIY experience but it at least felt like you were allowed to touch the electronics. A community has since sprung up around the Werkstatt-01 with all sorts of modding ideas which would get you deeper into the electronics if that’s of interest. If not then what you do have is a very cool little semi-modular synth with an unmistakable Moog sound.
Details
It’s a single oscillator synth with a switchable saw and pulse waveforms and pulse width modulation. There’s a triangle/square LFO, an ADSR envelope, VCA and that Moog -24dB analogue ladder filter. It has a patch-wire bay for getting into some repatching of the internal bits and pieces as well as potentially connecting with the wider world of modular. The little synth is rounded off with a single octave button keyboard making it instantly playable. Sounds a lot like the Mother-32 right?
CV Expander
What’s new with the reissue is that they’ve included the CV Expander which fits somewhat inelegantly over the patch-bay and gives you proper Eurorack style patch sockets. This was previously available as an optional upgrade. They’ve also sorted out the Gate In issue where the original Expander didn’t really have a Gate input and in order to attach a keyboard you had to plug it into the Gate Out which sort of worked. Actually, I’m not sure if they’ve improved the electronics or just changed the label.
Check out my video below where I will look into those sorts of details.
Werkstatt-01 is available for pre-order now. A great Christmas present for a synth-curious loved one!
