The new MXR Hybrid Fuzz features two iconic Fuzz Face tones with the snarling, higher-gain aggression of a silicon transistor and the smoother, warmth of a germanium transistor in a single circuit.

Hybrid Fuzz

Sometimes all you need is a good fuzz pedal and the new MXR Hybrid Fuzz looks like it might just fit that bill. Keeping fuzz circuits simple is generally the way forward and this one has two controls; Fuzz and Volume.

It is based on the classic Fuzz Face circuit but with a twist. While the original Fuzz Face uses a variant with silicon transistor and germanium transistor separately.

In the Hybrid Fuzz, both are featured in one circuit and are always active at the same time. In this way, the best of both worlds is achieved: aggressive from silicon, warm and round from the germanium.

Fuzz Feel

The official video sounds pretty good and I suspect it should do the job. However, I always find with fuzz pedals it also comes down to how they react and feel when you play through them. Therefore, it will certainly be one to try out and see how it fits into an existing guitar rig.

It comes finished with a trippy graphic by One Horse Town that really sets the mood for this fuzz.

Verdict

I like the look and sound of this fuzz, but then I am a fuzz pedal addict and I am also quite fond of modern-day MXR Custom Shop/Dunlop pedals.

This new Hybrid Fuzz pedal is due out on 26 June 2023.

MSRP – USD 169.99
