NAMM 2016: Blackstar Union Flag Special Fly 3
The FLY 3 is a tiny little desktop micro amp designed for when you need to keep the noise down. The model has been out for a while, so Blackstar have given it a makeover for 2016 and are producing it in this new ‘Union Flag’ version.
I have to say that I own a regular plain black version of one of these amps and think that they are really pretty good. Mine has been running on the same set of batteries that it came with. I would probably say it gets a good 10 hours of play a week and I have owned it for nearly six months now. I also find it’s pretty easy to dial in a useable sound with the simple control layout, so I enjoy using mine a lot.
Tonally, it’s pretty versatile for such a small battery powered amplifier. The ‘Infinte Shape Feature’ control gives you lots of possibilities to alter the tone of your amp. The FLY 3 also features tape delay effects, allowing you to add some depth to the sound. It’s not really a reverb, but can be used in lieu of that type of effect. You could use it, say, to make a solo sound a bit nicer or add a bit of sparkle to clean chords.
The FLY 3 also comes with an MP3/LINE IN jack built in, allowing you to connect to your MP3 player, mobile phone or computer and jam along to your favourite tracks. The ‘Emulated’ Output jack can also be used with headphones. Capable of being battery powered, you can take the FLY 3 with you wherever you go as a set of portable speakers. It can also be expanded with an optional add-on speaker – the Fly-103 – to make it truly stereo.
