NAMM 2016: Gretsch Streamliner Series
Gretcsh have revived an old favourite this year and are re-releasing the Streamliner range. The original Streamliner series of guitars was made for people that wanted a Gretcsh Electromatic guitar back in the 1950s but whose budget couldn’t quite stretch to it. Nowadays the original Streamliners are pretty collectable and so this reissue is a welcome addition to the companies range.
The new versions certainly look the part with a markedly vintage styling, yet should not have you worrying too much about your bank balance, as the RRPs seem pretty reasonable.
So, if you are looking for something with that vintage vibe but are on a budget then these could be a good deal for the money. Of course, we will have to wait and see what they actually play like to be certain.
The company has added a more modern 12” radius to the guitars and fitted medium jumbo frets, so they should be comfortable to play. The Broad Tron pickups have also been designed to give that classic look (and hopefully sound) as well. There are models with or without Bigsby B50 trems, various finishes and even some left-handed versions as well, so it looks like there will be plenty of choice.
I just wish they had given them more memorable names, as numbers aren’t the easiest way to distinguish between all the different variations…
RRPs GBP £350 – £395
