NAMM 2016: Zakk Wylde holds press conference for Wylde Audio
The first new instruments from Wylde Audio, the Odin, War Hammer and Viking models, were announced at the 2016 Winter NAMM. Zakk, it seems, has already been putting the prototype versions through their paces at recent Black Label Society shows.
Zakk Wylde already announced at last year’s NAMM show that he was ending his relationship with Gibson to start up his own guitar company. His long-standing relationship with Gibson has produced many Gibson and Epiphone signature models. They were all pretty highly regarded and had very distinct looks, and toward the end of their relationship some pretty wild body styles as well. He also had a deal with Marshall amps. That has now all ceased, as he will allegedly be announcing his own amp range as well some time this year.
Zakk held a press conference explaining how he had come up with his new range. He says he has been testing them all last year himself and it appears he has gone back to the drawing board a few times to get this new range right. During the press conference he was asked if he had used them to record with and replied that he had used them all over the new album he has been working on.
He explained his thought process for the extra large fret marker (he had seen Django Reinhardt with similar ones on his guitars) and his passion for trying out different wood combinations and his widely known love of EMG pickups. He also presented technical drawings of all the new guitars too, saying he was preparing to roll out the new guitars soon. The tentative RRPs are $999 for hard-tailed guitars and $1099 for Floyd Rose-loaded versions. Currently, though, the site only allows you to sign up for information and register your interest.
The man is a pretty huge character and also a highly regarded player. It will be interesting to see exactly how these new models are received by the public. The guy has a huge following, especially through his links to Ozzie, Sabbath and Black Label Society.
I’m sure he will dedicate himself to this new range, as he is always passionate about what he does. The man has had a few ups and downs over the last few years (being dumped by Ozzie and almost nearly dying from blood clots) and so I think this will drive him to make this range something special. He doesn’t seem to do anything in life by half measures!
The new products have been slated for a March/April release in the US via Zakk’s website. The worldwide distribution will be handled by Schecter, so the range should appear in most countries at some point this year. So 2016 looks to be a busy year for Zakk, and hopefully a good one for him as well.
