NAMM 2018: JHS Bonsai – 9 Tube Screamers in one pedal?
More Tube Screamers than you can shake a stick at!
If you love the Tube Screamer, you now have a chance of an overdose, thanks to JHS. Bonsai is to Tube Screamer what the Muffuletta is for Big Muffs: There are 9 different versions of the legendary overdrive to switch.
JHS Bonsai
It has a completely analogue structure and no modelling is involved. This shows, on the one hand, the ability of JHS to build pedals, on the other hand, the small differences (structurally) between the tube screamers is probably minimal. In addition to the volume, tone and gain controls, JHS has also released the mandatory toggle switch as a knob.
The following models are in the Bonsai:
Boss OD-1 – the TS-model, more gain, brighter sound
TS-808 – The classic Tube Screamer
TS-9 – more mids
MSL – Metal Tube Screamer without metal sound, more bass and gain
TS-10 – Modified TS-9 with more bass and less gain
Exar OD-1 – Polish clone with more gain, more transparent
TS-7 – Hot Mode, more gain and bass
Keeley Mod Plus – softer mids and heights, more bass
JHS Strong Mod – Their take on the classic circuit, with added
Sounds like a very interesting pedal, especially if you want to use different tube screamer or for studio owners. I have to say the Tube Screamer is my least favourite overdrive pedal, but I know many players love it.
