NAMM 2018: Mackie presents new MP Series of in-ear monitors
Mackie has today announced a new series of in-ear monitors, the MP Series. The new range has three models, the MP-120, MP-220 and MP-240, each with a different driver number or configuration. If you’re looking to switch over to in-ear monitoring for your band or project, these should be worth a look. Mackie generally have a decent balance between price and quality.
What are the differences across the range? MP-120 has one driver per monitor. The MP-220 has two, which presumably will give you better performance if you need higher levels Then there’s the MP-240, with a “Dual Hybrid Driver” design. It incorporates what they call a “balanced armature driver”, with a custom crossover. Sound isolation is rated at 40dB, frequency response is 20Hz-20kHz. The cables are detachable, which is useful. Each comes with three different types of ear bud, in three different sizes. Each model comes with a hard case, too.
There are certain differences in how the three models sound. With its single large dynamic driver, the MP-120 aims for balanced sound and low-end clarity. The MP-220’s dual dynamic drivers deliver tighter bass response and enhanced details in the mid to high frequencies. Finally, the MP-240’s hybrid dynamic-armature drivers mix the former’s punchy bass with the latter’s clarity. Makes for a nice choice of in-ears, doesn’t it?
Aware of ergonomics’ importance, Mackie gave all three models molded enclosures with three different types of ear tips to ensure comfort. Furthermore, the detachable cables are shielded, internally braided, and equipped with MMCX connectors. There’s clearly lots of thought put into making these in-ears come to life, which is always nice to experience!
Pricing and availability
The Mackie MP Series will be available worldwide from February 1, 2018. Sold individually, the US MSRP pricing is $139.99 for the MP-120, $209.99 for the MP-220, and $279.99 for the MP-240.
