NAMM 2018: Supro David Bowie limited edition Dual Tone
The guitar from his Reality Tour
Supro is doing a very limited David Bowie Supro Dual Tone limited edition guitar for 2018, based on the two early ’60s guitars that he bought for the recording of his Reality album.
New Killer Star
The original guitars were 1961 Supro Dual Tone models both of which were hard tail instruments and the first one appeared on the cover of Bowie’s New Killer Star single, so they are fairly well known and very nice looking guitars even with the Bowie association.
Uber Cool
Being a huge Bowie fan myself, I instantly think of him and his cool guitar when I see one, so it was really good to see this limited run being announced, just wish I could get one myself!
Rainbow frets
The second Supro Dual Tone was modified luthier Flip Scipio who then inlaid the top five fret slots with rainbow colours and also installed a Bigsby vibrato at Bowie’s request. This particular Supro Dual Tone became Bowie’s favourite guitar and main live one and also appeared on the cover of the “A Reality Tour” live album.
Rumble
Allegedly Bowie chose this old Supro model as it had originally been used by Link Wray on his infamous 1958 hit song Rumble single and so David was after that raw vibe, that and the fact that look very vintage, classy and uber cool probably hurt either.
It has an alder body and features a tummy cut for comfort, below is the ‘official’ list of specifications and ‘Bowie’ related appointments, logos and certificates etc.
