NAMM 2019: Joyo R-02 TaiChi with Dumble tones for, er, $53!
Capture the tones of the legendary Dumble Overdrive Special for peanuts?
Joyo’s R-Series continues to expand apace with the launch of the R-02 TaiChi overdrive pedal. The company says the pedal captures the tones of the legendary Dumble Overdrive Special. Did we already mention this pedal will cost £50/$53?
Joyo R-02 TaiChi
The Overdrive Special boutique amp is a target for amp companies worldwide chasing its legendary tone. Originals change hands on the private market for insane sums of money and guitarists on guitar forums argue about its sound in threads on both sides of the Atlantic.
Boutique Amp Tone?
So what does Joyo do? They only go and release a fifty quid pedal (just over fifty bucks) that it says achieves the Dumble Special Overdrive tone! Good luck with that… But at this price, I would take a punt on this if I was after that sound.
It features the standard Volume, Gain and Tone controls you’d expect from a drive pedal. But it adds a Voice control knob used to tweak the gain limit and bass response.
Budget Dumble?
It is hard to know exactly how close the TaiChi comes close to a Dumble Overdrive Special because most of us don’t own one of the insanely overpriced amps. Howard Dumble is a bit of a recluse, making two or three amps a year. However, if it is a decent overdrive pedal then for fifty British pounds or US dollars it is a bit of a deal anyway.
As with all R series pedals, you get the cool ambient lighting feature, making it easy to see on a darkened stage. If it can get anywhere near Joyo’s bold claims, then it could be a decent drive pedal for those of us that are gigging and cannot afford to lug around a $70,000 amp!
RRP – GBP 49,95 / USD 53
