More new pedals from Dunlop/MXR announced. After unveiling the Timmy Overdrive earlier this week, we now get the Crybaby Q Zone Fixed Wah for guitarists and the Thump Bass Preamp for bass players.

Cry Baby Q Zone Fixed Wah

If you like that ‘cocked’ wah sound but don’t get on with wah pedals, then the Cry Baby Q Zone could be for you.

Instead of fiddling with a conventional wah’s rocking pedal, the Q Zone lets you directly dial in that ‘sweet spot’. It has a simple, three knob layout that control the volume, bandpass shape and frequency centre.

Personally, I think this is a really expensive way of getting a ‘Cocked Wah’ tone. I get that not everyone wants a wah pedal, but convenient or not, I don’t think it’s worth it. Then again, I love wah pedals and own over a dozen, so I’m probably not the target market for this type of pedal anyway.

MXR Thump Bass Preamp

The new MXR Thump Bass Preamp is based on the classic Echoplex Preamp and has the same tone-sweetening effect on bass. It has treble and bass controls for you to cut or boost frequencies at 8 kHz and 4 Hz. A mid knob cuts or boosts the midrange as determined by the frequency knob, ranging between 250 Hz – 1 kHz.

Should be a useful tool for players looking to add more boost and that extra ‘oomph’ to their bass signal.

I made one of these way back in the early 90’s by rehousing an old crybaby into a regular stomp box. Wish I would have had money to patent the idea. 🙁
